Hi anon! I believe we’ve answered this type of question before, but I’ll throw in my two cents.
It depends how you’re using the reference image to trace. If you’re just following the contours, you’re not going to learn how to construct the form, and you’re not going to learn why you’re drawing what you’re seeing.
On the other hand, if you build on top of the reference image, finding the large forms and the 3D structure of the figure, then you learn more, and your drawing will also feel more cohesive.
Don’t worry about your style just yet, just think about: what is the best way to convey what you’re seeing. Make stylistic choices, don’t box yourself into one style.

Hi anon! It’s all a matter of following the form when you’re laying the patterns on. You have to visualize the folding of the clothing in 3D space and how that is going to distort the patterning.
For more abstract prints, if you can’t easily replicate the pattern, you can use an image you find online. This is usually where I see artwork fall flat, because just overlaying the image isn’t enough. Manually distort the image, scrunching it up where the folds are denser, and stretching it to face the right way.
Adding a prominent shadow and shading to the creased areas also makes the clothing more believable.
When the print is complex, but not so much that you can’t replicate it, I still recommend redrawing rather than trying to mold the original image, because redrawing it will allow you to make decisions while you draw, and ultimately it will be more believable and time-effective. It’s much easier to study than to cheat, after all! (This is a joke. Using and modifying pattern and print isn’t cheating, it’s just another form of using the tools.)
I hope this helped a bit! You can also play with line color. Coloring the lines within the clothing can help it integrate with the object, rather than having black lines that don’t mesh with the pattern so well.

ATTENTION ALL DIGITAL ARTISTS
There is a website called Humble Bundle. Right now, Corel Painter, normally a multi-hundred dollar program, is on sale for 25$. It comes in a bundle, so it comes with multiple other things, brushes, and other programs that compliment Painter. The money goes to charity, and it seems like you can choose how much of it goes there!

I would recommend looking at some reviews *by artists*. It’s best to search for youtube channels that specialize in reviewing tech and art tablets, as well as gain insight from artists who actually use the hardware, who may not have the most technical knowledge of it, but who have the closest experience to your own.

Keep in mind the longevity of your hardware. Apple iOS tends to update frequently, leaving older models in the dust, and further down the line Procreate may not be supported on your model.
And don’t rule out other display tablets just yet. Weighing out the costs, if you’re solely using your iPad for a single use, it may not be the best value, given the steep price of the thing. All in all, just consider all your choices and get a lot of opinions before you make your choice!

This is the part i’m supposed to tell you that there are cheaper, bigger, and more dependable tablets on the market, but if you think the convenience of the iPad will let you draw more and easier, and therefore make your life better, than there isn’t anything that will keep you from following your dreams!
Also consider (since you want to MAXIMIZE your drawing satisfaction) the Paper-like screen protectors that everyone on the Twitter Discourse swears by
Here’s one I found (PaperLike) but this Japanese one looks like what was personally recommended by Twitter Discourse (Bellemond)
