“ as an addendum to the picture i submitted (animal crossing’s isabelle in a fighting stance), i’d also really like a tutorial on hands at odd angles (directly at/away from the viewer, in complex postures, etc.). thanks again!”

Heya! Are all 50 submissions going to be redlined or just some?

All 50 will be redlined. The reason for the cap is so we *can* get through all of them in a reasonable amount of time. Hope that clears it up!

Submissions are now CLOSED!

Hello! I was curious to know, after reading your guidelines and such about submissions, if there was a submission that didn't quite follow them, would they be ignored? Like, say they requested help for 3 areas, instead of your limit of 2? Thanks!

If you missed the part about focal points in your redline, the mods will tackle the two first points and ignore the third.

Hi! I recently saw your tutorial on drawing/designing PoC characters, do you have any tips on drawing monolids? Especially stylized monolids?

theredlinestation:

Read below for details!

Many of you have noticed that we’ve been fairly inactive lately. We’d like to apologize - first for taking so long with the promised submissions - and also for the radio silence regarding our status.

The blog is still running, and we’re not planning on going anywhere for a long time!

With that in mind, we have queued up the last of our submissions and we are getting ready for another batch as soon as possible! As a submission-hopeful, here’s what you need to know!

When can I submit my art?

Submissions will open on March 24th at 1600 UTC (click here to convert it to your Timezone).

How do I submit my art?

When we open submissions, you will be able to go into the blog from PC or mobile and click the SUBMIT button on the blog. This button will not be available until the aforementioned time, so you cannot see it right now. Don’t panic.

What can I submit?

Please CLICK HERE and re-read our submission guidelines!

We have updated a lot of things since the previous submissions and we will not be accepting anything that doesn’t comply with the rules. If your submission doesn’t follow the rules it will be deleted without warning, so please look it over!

Quick refreshers:

- You can submit ONE piece of art.

- You must give us a specific set of things (the limit is two) that you need help with. For example - “anatomy, specifically with hands, and shading”.

- Animals, fantasy creatures, humans, cartoons, typography, caricatures, landscapes - YES, it’s ALL OKAY. Please make sure to add your reference image where possible.

- We will NOT accept inappropriate content, submissions containing hate speech, slurs, etc.

Any asks about submission guidelines will not be answered if they are already answered in the Submission Rules and Guidelines post. READ IT.

How many submissions will you accept?

Due to our past experience with having an extreme load of submissions (in the hundreds) we have decided to curb our current submissions at 50. That means that as soon as we get 50 submissions, our inbox will automatically be closed. If you miss your chance to submit this time - don’t worry! There will be other times to send your art. :)

Haha, I realize you're all probably very busy with your own lives & running this (AMAZING) blog, but I'm kind of in a pinch. My friend's having their birthday soon, and I wanna draw their OC! Problem is, all their OCs are dudes [masc bodies], and I'm Very Gay™ [only draw girls]. Could someone make a quick tutorial explaining how to draw guys? I understand the muscles & stuff; it's the structure/bones/ribcage I don't. (If at all possible, could it be Chekov or Future? Please & thank you!)

How long will your mod applications be open?

Hey, thanks for asking! We are thinking that we will keep them open for probably around 3 weeks or even a month! So if you need time to get your stuff together, you don’t need to hurry!

I have no idea how to draw asian eyes. I see the differences in photos and even in artwork but because of my heavily stylized art (particularly around the eyes) i don’t know how to replicate it. I don’t even draw the crease above the eye in caucasian eyes. Do you have any advice for this kinda thing?

Hello! We recently posted a tutorial on this - please try scrolling down through the blog! :) You should come upon it fairly quickly.

Hello thanks for your precious help. I would like you to focus on hands 😊 .

Redlined by Mod SugarQuill

Hi there! What a thoughtful and complex pose. I really appreciate that you’re putting in the work with hands! They can be really challenging.

Your hands here are actually done reasonably well. The fingers are going to be a bit longer than you have them here to match the proportion (I use the face).

I tried this pose out in real life and used it as my reference. I found that my hands naturally curved at rest, so I implemented that here. If you notice, I’ve also made it so that her right hand is curling around the left wrist. Hands and fingers are seldom rimrod straight, and like to drape around things. I also like to make sure my fingers follow the same curve (see my guidelines on the bottom hand), and separate them out between knuckle bones –– there are three segments, called phalanges, to every finger.

Just as some general anatomy tips, I’ve also made some suggestions about how to add to the fluidity and gravity of the pose. The main takeaway here is to see how your weight will respond to sitting back on your haunches. I know that might sound nuts, but if you put a line of action on the pose, you’d see [the spine] going downwards, as everything rests on the rear end/back leg. What helps most with that is doing poses yourself to see how they feel, not just look.

Anyway, great job and happy trails!

Comments from Mod Wackart

The leg stance is quite interesting, and actually took a lot of fidgeting about, so good on you for trying yourself with complex poses, really bold.
What immediately jumped out at me was that the fingers in the piece are of equal length. If you look at the average human hand, you’ll see that the middle finger is the longest, of which the ring-and-index is ( -very roughly- based on your genetics, personally, my index is EXACTLY as long as my ring finger, but my roomie’s ring finger is about half a quarter of an inch shorter than their index ) equally as long, with the pinkie finger being the shortest.

The fingers on the piece was also a little bit thin, so you might add just a bit more chunk to them, to make them more substantial.

The pose is really interesting so once again, I harbour a lot of respect for you to tackle it, and you’ve done really well.

I'm thinking of submitting a portfolio to an art school. They have a few things required like a self portrait in a realistic style. But they have about 10 that are your choice! And I don't know what to draw! Or where to ask on a critique of a portfolio!

ChatterBuck's will be featuring portfolio feedback once the slots are filled up. However, the time-horizon on that particular episode is rather far if you’re going to submit to an art school this spring.

Potentially, I would ask the people on @redlineacademy if they take whole portfolios, or would be able to review a specific portion of your portfolio.

We are currently undergoing some restructuring in terms of our submission (+ additional management ) and might be able to have a look at one of your pieces when we open our submissions again soon.

Hello Anon!
We are not dead, but are preparing to release the last couple of redlines from last haul. We are currently discussing the amount of submissions per opening  and how to manage the blog the best way possible.

Thank you so much for your patience, we will get back to posting as soon as possible.
