Do you have any tips for drawing people in wheelchairs?

I don’t personally have any experience with wheelchairs, so I’m going to redirect you to this tutorial: “How to Draw Manual Wheelchairs Properly” by calvin-arium

As for the more technical part of drawing wheelchairs, the best thing honestly is to study. Just like drawing any sort of technology, you have to study the structure of the wheelchair. It’s a double whammy because you also have to study how to draw sitting people comfortably!

Sorry I couldn’t be more help, but it’s all down to practicing!

How do you draw short people next to tall people? Whenever I draw them, they look kinda like children and I get so confused proportion wise since they would have about the same head size and I base things off of head size?

Quick Announcement:

We have a bit of sad news - one of our beloved mods, Em, has decided to step back from the redline blog for the time being in order to focus on their artwork and take some time off! This leave is indefinite for the moment, so we wanted to make an announcement in order to inform those following who had perhaps planned to ask them to redline something specific in the future.

While we’re on the topic, I would also like to remind you all that Redline Applications are still open!

So if you are interested in applying, please do so soon!

Please get your submissions in by the end of Saturday, April 20th (4/20/19). Don’t worry about timezones; it’s okay if it gets in a little past midnight. We’ll be checking our inbox the next morning on the 21st! :)

Y'all do some amazing work!! The posts I've seen so far are already super handy to keep in mind! I do have a quick question though, any tips for someone who's got an art block? I get vague ideas of what I want to draw, but I keep drawing the same pose a million times 😵

Art blocks can hit everyone for numerous reasons.
We have a few threads on motivation and how to help yourself keeping a healthy approach to your craft. Most of the time all an art-block need is time and new inspirations, so don’t be too afraid of your muse suddenly slipping away for good.

If you keep drawing the same pose over and over, it sounds like you’ve grown complacent in your routine, and is ready to go hog-wild with some new, experimental stuff. Consider getting new tools and materials ( Doesn’t have to be expensive, can be ground coffee beans or shaving foam, you decide. Just take your artistry elsewhere for a while. ) You can also try to expand your know-how on posing by trying out croquis and master studies, to try and shed the stagnating habit.

Hey, I'm wondering what sort of tablet I should buy? If I want to produce the best digital art, then is it a must to buy an expensive tablet with high pen pressure like the cintiq? Or is that not really necessary and i should just go for a cheaper tablet like the small intuos pro?

Hi anon! One thing I can say for sure is that you DO NOT have to buy a very expensive tablet, especially if you’re starting out. Get yourself a good, sturdy, and financially viable option. Trust me, you do not need anything fancy like the cintiq to start out!

Personally, I started out with the Intuos small in 2015 (and I still use it today! Holy cow!) and it’s got MORE than enough pen pressure. The thing you want MOST in a beginning tablet is something reliable and won’t break on you in 1-2 years.

Wacom kind of has this monopoly on the tablet market, if you couldn’t tell. The thing is, just like the iPhone works just as well as other phones that are half the price, the Cintiq is not all that different from other, cheaper tablets! You can buy from other brands, or if you’d like a wacom tablet, you can get the Intuos for pretty cheap if you shop second-hand. (I will say that a $20 tablet probably is not worth your money. The range of $70-90 is a pretty good price for a starter tablet)

There are so many comparable tablet brands on the market. I’m linking an article I found that is pretty thorough, so check Amazon or Youtube for reviews for them and pick the one you feel is right for you: https://tabletunderbudget.com/best-drawing-tablets/

hey! can i please get good references of like, simplifications of leg muscles and i guess legs in general? probably the pelvis too, the lower body is just killing me right now. (i mean in art, my own legs are fine =P)

When will you guys start posting submissions?

We have stuff queued right now that we’ve had finished BEFORE submissions were open, so we would like to get through posting that before we post any of the newest stuff. :) But don’t worry, some of it is already finished and just waiting its turn.

hey i have a quick question, do y'all think it's necessarily a bad thing to not have a consistent art style?

Not at all!!

Listen, we all do art differently, and for some folks, that means developing a consistent art style which they become accustomed to using for their art. A consistent art style is like short cuts that an artist will rely back on as a way to make redrawing the same character, props, or backgrounds over and over again easier for them.

And yet, you could even say that some folks with a distinct art style are not always super consistent with what they draw.

A way to boost your consistency when drawing specific characters might be to create a model sheet. Basically, create a reference of a character for EXACTLY how you want to make sure they are always drawn.

But if you are someone who is not constantly consistent, then I think what’s usually happening is: your art is continuing to grow. You keep finding new ways to draw, to paint, to do whatever it is you’re doing! And that should be exciting since that means you’re improving in small ways each time!

Maybe it’s less “improvement” and instead you’re looking for something “fresher”. You’re adopting styles and ideas from other sources around you and wanting to add them in. That’s fine, and I think that’s fun when you’re drawing for the sake of enjoying yourself.

In the end, you may result in finding yourself a style you stick to, but I don’t think you should necessarily limit yourself to try and hone something in. Let your style develop naturally on its own as you improve your art, change different ideas and concepts, adopt characteristics from styles you adore, and eventually when you’re producing art for yourself, your art style may peek through there a bit.
